The ex-South Launceston and Western Storm star, 23, and Williamstown’s Adam Marcon were four points behind Townsend in a tight race for the J.J. Liston Trophy.
Fellow Tasmanian and former St Kilda player Eli Templeton (Port Melbourne) polled 11 votes to rank equal seventh.
Hanson and Templeton also represented Victoria this season.
