The Tasmanian Aboriginal Corporation last week submitted to the state’s Nomenclature Board the names; some of which were to replace titles which were culturally offensive.
Nine of these were for places on the North-West Coast, related to locations connected to a massacre in 1828 where about 30 people were killed and thrown from a cliff face.
But the Nomenclature Board said it would await a review of the Aboriginal and Dual Naming Policy, due at the end of December, and would consult other Aboriginal groups before acting.
“The board received several submissions from other Aboriginal representative organisations and other community members that have called for wider consultation with local Aboriginal groups regarding the nominated names,” it said.
“Separately, the board noted recent decisions interstate to replace offensive names. The board supports the replacement of similarly offensive names in Tasmania.”
