Pidgeon was appointed the right-hand man last year to Tasmanian Magpies ANL head coach Jon Fletcher after previous time in charge of the one-time Tassie Spirit.
But he decided to hand in his bulging netball coaching resume to guide on-and-off court the direction of Netball Tasmania’s fortunes.
Except when the new chief executive plays devoted dad on cold Hobart mornings.
“I love my coaching of the high-performance programs, but I really had to make my own decision of how to manage it,” Pidgeon said.
“Being in the CEO role, it is critical I’ve got that level of independence and can oversee the governance of programs, and ensure the coach selections are transparent.
“So I have withdrawn myself from that side for the next few years or however long.
“But I will still probably coach my daughter in the under-13s because that’s my recreational thing and that’ll be the extent of my coaching.”
Leaving the banking sector, as a human resources manager, Pidgeon said his passion for grassroots netball has started to grow.
“I’m enjoying the role immensely, but like any role it takes a while to find your feet, build relationships and understand the things that you need to understand to have an impact,” he said.
“I have been reminded how different it is being involved as a coach to being an administrator.
“But at the same time, moving out of the commercial world into a sport that I already understand has been absolutely advantageous.
“It’s meant I haven’t had to start from scratch with relationships or the learning. I have a lot of knowledge of the game and the programs.”
