Drawing from a pool of less than 240 children from ages 9 to 12, the York Street school landed three of the eight titles up for grabs as a record 2300 runners descended on a chilly Symmons Plains.
Xavier Davie won the boys’ 9s race, his sister Isabella claimed the girls’ 12s and Averyl Quinn added the girls’ 10s.
On a freezing day in the Midlands, schools from all over the state sent teams with Tasmania Police even forced to issue traffic warnings as competitors and supporters made their way home.
All regions were represented among the winners with the North-West claiming a 11 years double through Oliver Sims, of Devonport’s Our Lady of Lourdes, and Burnie’s Charli Davis while Forth’s Tom Winkle added the boys’ 12s race.
Swansea’s Isaac Melling took the boys’ 10s title back to the East Coast while Goulburn Street’s Olive Turk flew the flag for Hobart in the girls’ 9s race.
Athletics Tasmania executive officer Gabby Steele said it was “a hugely successful day” featuring 136 schools from as far afield as Bruny and King islands.
With spectators thrown in, about 5000 people were at the venue with the 120 entries on the day presenting plenty of logistical problems for organisers.
“It’s an enormous event but has the most amazing atmosphere,” Steele said.
“We are keen to cater for more students because the venue can allow for that, it’s just a case of reaching the schools in the first place and we are still welcoming new schools along.
“It is for all schools in Tasmania, whether state, private or home-schooled, and we encourage them to be involved because the kids and parents are crying our for it.”
The 10 to 12s events doubled as selection trials for the Tasmanian team to compete in the Australian Primary Cross Country Exchange in Hobart on August 11-14.
