Peter Cox has spent more than 15 years researching the mining town and aims to set the town’s record straight.
“I taught history at George Town and I decided one day, with the Historical Society, that I would do a little brochure on its history for visitors, I found out that most of the history, that appeared in the books, wasn’t accurate,” he said.
“[Lefroy] was one of the first major gold mining towns in Tasmania … it was the first one where mines actually ran at a profit.”
The George Town Historical Society launched the book on Monday night and will hold a public launch at Lulworth on June 30 at 4pm.
