After the City of Launceston called project tenders in March, two applications were received.
VOS Construction and Joinery was chosen to complete the work, which includes new paving and street furniture, extension of lawn areas, 21 dynamic lighting poles, 176m of LED strip lights, 10 umbrellas and new event infrastructure such as three-phase power.
It will also include a new feature play area near the LINC – but some existing elements like the bronze thylacine statues will remain.
City of Launceston General Manager Robert Dobrzynski said the development was “an attempt to reposition Civic Square's role in the CBD”.
"The design that has been drawn up for Civic Square is striking and contemporary, but it also has a nod to our past,” he said.
Work is expected to start next month and be completed in early 2018.
