Dairy Australia’s latest Situation and Outlook report shows cash flow and trust in the industry challenge the state’s dairy farmers, but improved farmgate prices and affordable input costs are providing respite.
Tasmanian dairy farmers are behind their Victorian counterparts in pessimism, but 44 per cent predicting lower profits is significant, Dairy Australia Senior Analyst John Droppert said.
“Many farmers across a number of regions continue to struggle financially and the wider industry is facing ongoing frustration and distrust in particular parts of the supply chain,” he said.
However despite this, 75 per cent of Tasmanian dairy farmers expect to increase production by 2019/20, Mr Droppert said.
Demand for milk exports grew, with a boost of 3.8 per cent in the past 12 months, he said.
