Centrelink
NOT having to visit Centrelink very often we trotted off last week to honour them with our presence. It was a virtually vacant building compared to some years ago when when we first became “elderly”.

Only a few desks were occupied and both areas where people are told to wait, were full. The receptionist greeted us with the comment that they couldn't help us there and we had to ring the senior citizens line. Moan groan. We were told that 8am was the best time to ring. We came home and, of course, I tried straight away. I almost fainted as I got through immediately. With all the negative comments about Centrelink we had a positive experience.

Missed Opportunities
I RECENTLY had the pleasure of walking over a pedestrian bridge spanning the Brisbane River from South Bank to the city. The span is longer than our proposed pedestrian bridge for North Esk from North Bank to the city. A similar but reduced design is achievable. Further the Brisbane bridge included a small pop-up coffee shop at mid-span with seating and a lookout. It was all enjoyable and well patronised. Surely our engineers, planners, mayor and aldermen can see enlightened, well designed solutions are out there. Come on Launceston, let’s go for it.

UTAS Inveresk
THE WISDOM of banning the building of new homes and residences on Inveresk to protect the lives of men, women and children and unnecessary property damage has been reinforced with the release of the University of NSW’s Professor John Church’s report indicating a major sea level rise and inundation of the area (The Examiner, May 23). Surely the aforesaid wisdom should apply to property of the proposed new University of Tasmania Inveresk campus. In the recent minor flood on Inveresk UTas Arts Faculty staff had to move items to higher levels in their Inveresk building. Can spokespersons for the each of the governments in plain non-spin language explain why the wisdom does not apply?
