The 21-year-old has been let off the leash by North Launceston coach Tom Couch this season, going from a lock down player to a creative half back.
The Bombers rebuilt their backline from scratch during the pre-season with several key personnel departing and it has been the cornerstone of their success.
“Jay Foon’s performance on the weekend [against Tigers] was the best performance I’ve seen from a TSL player this year,” Couch said.
“He was outstanding and I played a bit of match simulation with him last night [Wednesday] with the state squad and he was best on again.
“He’s in really great nick, he’s full of confidence, he’s going for his marks and hitting his kicks.” The former Queechy and Launceston College student said the entire defensive unit was now welded together with Jay Lockhart, Jake Pearce, Arion Richter-Salter and Connor Young in command.
“We are all pretty good mates off the field and I think that is why we are playing such good footy,” Foon said.
“Last year I was sort of thrown back as a tall option and I’ve got a licence to attack more this year off half back – and that’s where I like to play.”
Foon was part of North’s 2015 premiership and the grand final loss last season, but missed the 2014 triumph with a broken leg.
