The closure affected 86 sheep processing staff, but only eight attended the workshop today.
JBS contracted professional trainers to deliver the workshops under its employee support program, Longford plant manager Vernon Piwari said.
“We completed workshops for displaced employees focusing on a range of issues, including dealing with change and preparing for employment,” Mr Piwari said.
“The state government also offered support for employees from Centrelink and its Rapid Response Skills Initiative,” he said.
JBS will continue supporting employees with workshops and food via Foodbank, of which it is a sponsor.
“Hopefully we’ll capture the balance [of staff] next week,” Mr Piwari said.
JBS cited low sheep production as the reason for the temporary closure and expect to start processing sheep again in spring.
