Queensland Police have confirmed a car pulled out of a dam in the state’s south-east belonged to missing Tasmanian man Stuart Gatehouse.
EARLIER:
Police are trying to establish if a car retrieved from a Queensland dam with human remains found inside it is linked to missing Tasmanian man Stuart Gatehouse.
A crime scene was established following the discovery of the vehicle submerged at Borumba Dam, near Imbil, in south-east Queensland on Thursday.
Mr Gatehouse disappeared 13 years ago. He was last seen in Kenilworth, Queensland, around April 2004.
According to the national missing persons register, he left Kenilworth to travel to Gympie, but never arrived.
A man called police in March after locating a large object underwater when using a depth sounder near the dam’s boat ramp.
Divers searched the water on Thursday and found the car. Brisbanetimes.com.au reported the car was believed to be the red 1986 Holden Commodore Mr Gatehouse was last seen in.
Once the vehicle was removed from the water, police located skeletal remains inside.
The State Homicide Squad is assisting Sunshine Coast CIB detectives with the investigation.
