McCormack, 16, defeated Queenslander Josh Barber 6-1, 6-3 in Sunday’s men’s singles quarter final at the Launceston Regional Tennis Centre, while Barnett upset third-seed Jamieson Nathan (ACT) in three sets.
Barnett won the thrilling encounter 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.
Women’s singles first-seed Vanessa Dobson defeated New South Wales’ Emma Pollock 6-4, 6-4 to book a finals date with Sandy Bay’s Eliane Fader. The Tasmanian second seed took down Queensland’s Annie Donaldson in comfortable fashion – 6-3, 6-1.
In the girls’ Pardey Shield contest, for the state’s best under-18 players, Sandy Bay’s Olivia Maskell went down to Fader in the semi-final stage. Fader will now play Charlotte Ingram in the final after she defeated Park Grove’s Arnaka Bourn 6-1, 6-2.
In the boys’ shield battle, it was McCormack and Barnett that won through.
McCormack cruised past Legana’s Ronan Naidoo in the quarter final before narrowly edging past Sam Edgar in their semi final. McCormack won 5-7, 7-5, 10-6.
Barnett’s path on the other hand was slightly more smooth as he took down Oliver Hadley (6-1, 6-0) in the quarters and Newstead’s Sam Whitehead (6-0, 6-3, 10-5) in the semis.
The boys final starts at 11.30am and is followed by the girls at noon, while the men’s and women’s finals will begin at 10am and 10.30am, respectively.
