Since undergoing a back operation four years ago, Riverside 80-year-old Jack De Bruyn has become one of EFM Windsor’s most dedicated gym goers, regularly attending three sessions a week.
On Tuesday, the Netherlands native reached his 500th session.
“(After the operation) my GP said I either should go swimming or join something like this,” Mr De Bruyn
“Swimming is fantastic but not so much in the winter, so I thought I’d do this and I’m quite happy doing it, I enjoy it.”
Mr De Bruyn’s typical training session starts and finishes on the exercise bike, with balancing, walking, upper body lifting and rowing exercises in between.
“It’s done a lot of good for me because I think if you don’t do this sort of thing you stiffen up.
“When I go away and I haven't been (to the gym) for a fortnight or three weeks I can really feel the difference so I try to keep active, that's the only way really when you get to my age.”
Admission to the 500 club earned Mr De Bruyn a photo on the gym’s wall of fame, as well as a 500 club t-shirt presented by EFM Windsor fitness coach David Manktelow.
Mr De Bruyn said his gym routine had been just as useful for building up friendships as it had core strength.
“I get a lot of enjoyment out of meeting people here and they're all a very friendly lot –I would really recommend it to everybody, even at the age of 80.
“It's better than sitting at home and watching the TV.”
