“They are mesmerised by the beauty of these sea creatures - their graceful movements, the way they use their little monkey-like tails, even the way they perform colour changes using small special organs in the skin known as chromatophores,” he said. Seahorse World, at Inspection Head Wharf, Beauty Point in the beautiful Tamar Valley, is open to visitors from 9 - 5.30pm daily, but there’s a special Kids’ Discovery Program that runs in the school holidays specifically designed for youngsters.
Its content is tailored to children aged 4-10 years of age, it’s hands-on and loads of fun, especially the touch pool where everyone gets to hold a seahorse and other critters.
At least one parent has to accompany their children and the cost is $15 for children and $22 for adults ($19.80 for seniors/students) with all children taking home a souvenir bag.
From “The Cave” to “The Farm” to the Southern Ocean Aquarium there are fascinating things to learn at the working seahorse farm, and a variety of seahorses are on show including the West Australian seahorse, big bellied seahorse, yellow seahorse and slender seahorse.
Seahorse World also boasts examples of the Port Jackson shark, giant Tasmanian crab and the endangered giant freshwater crayfish among other amazing creatures.
The Discovery Program runs from Monday to Friday, starting at 9.45am sharp each day, from April 17-21 and from April 23-27. For bookings and more information go to www.seahorseworld.com.au or call 03 6383 4111.
