Shane Broad to contest Braddon recount

Scientist Shane Broad will seek to replace former Labor leader Bryan Green in state parliament.

Dr Broad on Tuesday morning said he had decided to contest the recount to fill the Braddon seat of Mr Green, who retired suddenly last week.

UTAS lecturer and Central Coast Cr Dr Broad polled quite strongly for Labor in the 2014 state election without being elected.

It is not yet known if former Labor MHA Brenton Best will also contest the recount.

If he does, it will be a two-way battle between Mr Best and Dr Broad.

If Mr Best does not contest, Dr Broad will win the seat.

Labor wants Dr Broad, particularly because Mr Best has said that if he returns to parliament it will be as an “independent Labor” MHA.

That means he would not consider himself bound by Labor’s policies.
