The former East Devonport coach and Devils player, who took over from Adam Henley in October, was reportedly released from his three-year contract for not meeting club standards.
It was reported that the club had concerns over Matheson’s guidance of young players and that a replacement would most likely come from within the club.
It is expected one of four assistant coaches in Brad Willis, Marcus Davies, Aaron Vince or Jon Lister will take on the extra workload.
Matheson was also a development coach with AFL Tasmania in 201 and won numerous premierships with Burnie (2001,03 and 04), Subiaco (2006), and Wynyard (2012).
The State League club have won just six games in their three seasons to date and take on 2016 finalists Burnie in round 1 at Twin Ovals on April 1.
