Tasked with the ominous challenge of recording, mixing and mastering his band’s debut release in less than a month, the Launceston 22-year-old passed with flying colours, finishing the project with time to spare and winning plaudits from Triple J Unearthed for the EP’s first single along the way.
Entitled Cold Hands Hold It Together, the EP is set to be released on Wednesday and will be officially launched at The Oak on March 11.
“I booked in the EP launch before we started the EP so it was like that was our goal,” Broxton said.
“We had to get it to the place that's printing all the CDs by February 15, and I booked it back in January so I was like ‘we've got enough time’.
“Once we started recording it only took us a couple of weeks which was good.”
Since playing their first shows in late 2015, The Sleepyheads have cemented a strong fan base, recently ticking over 1000 Facebook likes and recording nearly 1500 plays on their Unearthed profile.
Broxton said the support the band had received from Triple J had been “pretty crazy”.
“They've put our new single off the EP into the top 20 best Unearthed songs for the week or whatever which is really cool because you're with a bunch of bands that I really look up to like Sleepmakeswaves, and all these cool as bands that I’d actually call famous bands.
“We're looking to tour this year as well so Unearthed is really good to get a more national following.”
The band’s EP launch will also have a national flavour to it, with New South Wales band Paper Thin making the trip south to join Tasmanian acts Squid Fishing and Trent Buchanan in the support slots.
Broxton said he would be stoked should a three-figure crowd come through the doors.
“At The Oak if you get 50 people in there it's pretty full so I'm aiming for 100, that's my target.
“It's going to be a really fun show, we aim to have a very positive energy at all of our shows and everyone's always pretty happy which is good.”
The Sleepyheads EP launch will kick off at 8pm, with tickets available at the door for $10.
