The selection was reward for the 17-year-old midfielder who joined A-League club Melbourne City’s youth team a year ago.
An ex-Riverside High School student, Atkinson moved to Hobart at 14 years of age to play in the National Training Centre and scored an eye-catching hat-trick against Melbourne City on tour in Victoria.
Young Socceroos head coach Ufuk Talay named a 24-player squad for a training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra from February 6-9.
The squad consists of players born in 1999 who play for teams in the National Youth League.
“The aim of the camp is to have a look at these players in our environment, get them to understand the philosophies of the national teams and the way we want to play, and moving forward beginning to prepare for our qualifiers in October,” Talay said.
