Not that it is anything new for Netball Tasmania. The 54-year-old mentor was in charge under the state’s Tassie Spirit moniker post-2015.
Back in the Tasmanian role for Collingwood’s rookie ANL affiliate, Fletcher did not leave anything to chance in his side’s first Launceston training run on Saturday.
Looking like a discerning father in deep thought, he astutely analyses every move, every play and when happy, redeploys a switch of tactics.
The repetitive drills turn around faster and faster.
“Come on, balance,” he yells out to one midcourter, “now let it go”.
That reassuring measured influence also falls onto his coaching prodigies.
Assistant coach Aaron Pidgeon works well to detail.
He stands down one end of the court, pulling apart and isolating every forward thrust and defense play.
Fletcher’s coaching apprentice, ex-Kingston Blues coach Erin Baker, is no less measured in her instruction.
“Hard, flat out in front,” she assertively delivers the message to the playing group.
Fletcher gave the near two-hour workout the thumbs up, calling the first half an hour as “pretty intense”.
But in striving for perfection, the late move of training venues from the Silverdome court – considered to be one of the best in Australia – to the the Newnham campus Unigym court has one affect.
“They’re a couple of feet short,” he says of the court that almost kisses the wall.
