Dr Kent is encouraging Tasmanians to embrace the seasonal fruit this Christmas.
The University of Tasmania School of Health Sciences post-doctoral research fellow said a high intake of anthocyanins, or the purple and red compounds in fruit and vegetables, can be beneficial for blood pressure and brain function.
“My research specifically focuses on the health benefits of cherries and plums,” Dr Kent said.
Her research utilises juice produced from Huon Valley cherries.
“We’ve shown that if you consume cherries every day, it can be associated with a reduction in blood pressure and improvements in brain function in older adults and people who have dementia.”
After her recent move to Tasmania, Dr Kent was amazed by the fresh fruits available. She encouraged Tasmanians to be “mindful” when consuming energy-dense Christmas treats containing dried fruits.
