Councillor John Temple issued a question without notice at the meeting, asking council to consider renaming the oval the Donald J. Trump Park to pay homage to a man ‘likely to be the greatest agent of change this century’. 

Cr Temple said the proposal would likely be workshopped before being formally addressed at council's next meeting.

“It's an apolitical comment, it's not saying we're Republican supporters or Democrat supporters, but this gentleman is going to be US president... and we do wish him well for all our sakes that his leadership is fruitful,” Cr Temple said. 

“You hear that some people are against him or for him, this is neither for or against his politics, it’s simply acknowledging the position he will soon hold and wishing him well for his term of leadership.”

The man who stumped many onlookers earlier this month by claiming the US presidency ahead of Democrat Hillary Clinton is not devoid of cricketing links, with news reports from 2015 revealing Mr Trump had followed former Australian Test batsman Damien Martyn on Twitter.

A scroll through Twitter reveals the West Australian is no longer on the new president’s radar, but could a cricket ground named in his honour be the incentive required to bring Trump to Tasmania?

“In their term of office most American presidents visit Australia – I'm not sure if any in the past have visited Tasmania but I think it’s probably unlikely.

“I think the Queen drove through Westbury in 1954 on her first visit to Australia and we'd be interested if he came to visit at some point, it would be a big day.”

The suggestion was not the only Mr Trump query made in councillor question time, with councillor Bob Richardson seeking official clarification on whether Mr Trump had promised to ‘make America great again’ or ‘make America grate again’.
