The book explores Mr Burles’ rich history, as a farmer, truck driver, cook, and soldier. But he is best known as Cox Plate winning horse The Cleaner’s trainer, before he was acrimoniously taken off the job.
Horses have always been a feature in Mr Burles’ life, but it is clear he has a special regard for The Cleaner.
“When I first got him I knew he was special ... a shocker up-start bloody thing he was and I thought, ‘He’s for me’,” he said.
“I was really disappointed when I lost him. I was lost for a few weeks not getting up every morning and giving him a pat.”
Mr Burles said he was a bit overwhelmed to be the feature of a book.
“Peter Staples the author he rang me he said, ‘I’d like to write a book on you,’, you know, on me not just the horse and away he went and six months later there’s a book out,” he said.
The book, Mick and The Cleaner, is available now.
