Manager Jenny said the main reason women presented at the shelter was because of partner violence, but listed lack of affordable housing and mental health, drug and alcohol issues as other factors.
“It is very costly for people who rent to keep moving house because their lease has expired, or the rent is unaffordable as well as other circumstances,” she said. “Anyone in this situation who is on a low income may find it impossible to improve their financial circumstances with the added cost of removals, as well as paying rent and bond in advance, on top of usual household costs.”
Magnolia Place Launceston Women’s Shelter is funded by the Crown through the Department of Health and Human Services to provide short-term crisis accommodation and support for women and children.
