A Clifford Craig Medical Research Trust grant of $36,850 will this year allow Dr David Edis to conduct research into epidural steroid injections to prevent lumbar spine surgery.
Often pain in the legs is the result of the narrowing of the spinal canal due to ageing. During surgery, the back wall of the spinal canal is removed which creates more space around the spinal nerves which helps reduce nerve pain.

Dr Edis believes that the steroid injection could also reduce swelling and make more space around the spinal nerves in the canal, which would also help to reduce nerve pain.
“During our research, patients waiting for surgery will be injected with either steroids or a sterile solution without steroids, and then observed for two years to see if there is an improvement in those who received the steroids,” Dr Edis said.
