Human Services Minister Jacquie Petrusma said the funds would go into the government’s affordable housing strategy.
“Under the action plan the government is aiming to deliver around 900 new homes and provide support programs to house up to 1600 vulnerable Tasmanian families,” she said.
Shelter Tasmania executive officer Pattie Chugg said the organisation was pleased to see the government responding to the needs of vulnerable Tasmanians.
“Tasmania is currently facing an affordable housing crisis, despite the myth of cheap housing prices in the state,” she said.
“We also know that over 50 per cent of those people accessing homelessness services cite housing affordability as the reason for seeking support.”
Neighbourhood Houses were also a winner, with funding of $30,000 over two years for each of the state’s 33 houses – with a total spend of almost $1 million.
Mrs Petrusma said they were at the forefront of addressing disadvantage.
