The inclusion of the 25-year-old opens up the possibility of a lethal bowling partnership with fellow speed demon Shaun Tait as Tasmania's Twenty20 franchise looks to bounce back from the debacle against the Sydney Sixers.
Reed was a strike weapon for the Hurricanes in his first BBL season last summer, taking eight wickets in five games at 14.25.
This included hauls of 4-11 against the Sydney Thunder and 2-27 against the Scorchers, and skipper Tim Paine on Tuesday was a happy man to have him back in the squad.
"He's in our best 13 and we are thrilled to have him back fit," he said.
"He's one of our fastest bowlers and a huge weapon for us."
Apart from the work of George Bailey with the bat (who scored 62 out of the Hurricanes' 91), the other main positive from the 95-run loss - the form of Shaun Tait (2-33 from four overs) - brought a smile to Paine's face.
"Taity bowled with some real good pace, which is exactly what we got him down for," Paine said.
"He got the early wicket and we were really pleased with how Taity went.
"If we had our time again, we'd probably look to bowl him in that third over where we used Dunky [Ben Dunk, who conceded 10 from his only over].
"That was a pre-planned thing for [Nic] Maddinson and [Brad] Haddin where we wanted to take the pace off."
Paine described the Hurricanes' Sixers tormentor Nathan Lyon, who took 5-23, as just an "excellent bowler", with his drop through the air what his batsmen found most troubling.
But despite the nature of the loss, the Hurricanes are confident of bouncing back against the Heat, who suffered a seven-wicket loss to the Melbourne Renegades on Saturday.
"They [the Heat] are a dangerous side," Paine said.
"[As well as Tigers Alex Doolan and Andrew Fekete] they have also got Nathan Reardon and Chris Lynn, who we had some trouble with against last year at the Gabba, and we'll have our work cut out for us.
"It'd be nice to get him [Chris Lynn] in early on.
"If we can get a couple of wickets through Taity and get Chris Lynn in while the ball has still got a bit of hardness on it and it is still swinging around, that is our best chance.
"Our top order has been our strength for four years.
"But for one game, these things can happen. We are obviously not thrilled with the way we batted, myself Dunky and Kumar [Sangakkara].
"We've certainly got a lot of confidence that we can do the job."
Doolan comes into the Heat's squad for Test batsman Joe Burns.
Tuesday's game will start at 7.10pm.
