The ‘‘tree’’ is made out of metal and strewn with lights and a star, a stark contrast to a traditional pine tree, covered in festive baubles.
Twitter was abuzz with criticism, with user tombryan posting: ‘‘How embarrassing. Looking at the materials and assembly I’d say somebody’s just made off with about $34,000.’’
Facebook users were also overwhelmingly unimpressed, with Mary Faulkner posting: ‘‘Maybe if we just called it ‘lights on sticks’ and not a Christmas tree, it would be more fun and acceptable.’’
Launceston Cityprom executive officer Vanessa Cahoon believes Launceston’s traditional approach to the Brisbane Street Christmas tree is an accurate reflection of the city of Launceston.

Launceston boasts the largest Christmas tree in Tasmania.
The lights of the Launceston tree will be switched on at 8.30pm on Friday during Christmas in the City festivities.
