The hospital has struggled in the past several months with bed block and ambulance ramping as more and more patients required hospital stays.
An LGH support plan announced by Health Minister Michael Ferguson last month included the recruitment of 9.58 FTE nurses, the employment of a patient flow expert and the reopening of 12 beds in the former medical ward 4D.
The beds were scheduled to open on Monday but the process was delayed until it could be staffed to a safe level.
Until the additional nurses are recruited, the 12 new beds will be staffed with nurses from the hospital’s nursing pool.
