The 17-year-old, bowling all-rounder, received an unexpected phone call from Australian selector Greg Chappell on Wednesday morning saying he had been drafted into the squad to replace an injured New South Wales player.
‘‘I was very excited when I got the call,’’ the year 12 Scotch Oakburn College student said.
‘‘I have been working hard over the past few months and it was great to get the call-up.’’
Seymour joins Tasmania’s other representative in Hobart’s Caleb Jewell in the Australian team for the six-week tour of the UK where they will play the England under-19 side in one four-day Test match and five international one-dayers.
‘‘I am confident I will get to play in some of the games but I am not really sure yet because I haven’t been around the team or at training,’’ he said.
Seymour represented the state in the the national under-17 championships last December and under-19 cricket championships in January.
‘‘I didn’t have a great under-19 tournament but I had a much better under-17 one earlier in the year but I still went OK, bowling right-arm medium pacers and batting anywhere around six to eight,’’ he said.
Seymour played first-grade NTCA cricket with Mowbray this season in between his independent school and national commitments.
Cricket Tasmania’s Northern high performance coach, Clinton Reid, plays alongside Seymour at Mowbray and said his national selection was well deserved for the hard work he had put into his game.
Seymour hopes to make the Tassie Tigers senior list in the future and is planning a move to Hobart at the end of this year or next to pursue his state cricket dream.
