Treasurer Peter Gutwein has told an industry budget breakfast that the government will hold its ground when it comes to savings measures. Speaking at the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry state budget briefing in Hobart this morning Mr Gutwein said no government could continue spending more than it earns. "The savings measures in place are critical," Mr Gutwein said. Yesterday's state budget will have the state reach a surplus by 2016/17. "We are off the credit card completely," he said. Mr Gutwein warned both federal white papers could have a detrimental impact on the states GST share. He said this made fiscal responsibility even more important. "We are going to hold our ground," he said. Mr Gutwein said the state had to be prepared to withstand future shocks.
