Mr Barr resigned from The Geelong College last week after an investigation launched by the school council.
The Geelong Advertiser this morning reported Mr Barr was sprung viewing adult pornography at the school, with a photograph taken and distributed on social media.
The Geelong College council chairman Hugh Seward said school became aware of the matter just before Easter.
''The council immediately looking into the matter and when our concerns were confirmed Andrew Barr tendered his resignation,'' Dr Seward said in a statement.
Dr Seward said the issue was in breach of standards, and taken very seriously, but emphasised Mr Barr had not broken any laws in watching the pornography.
Mr Barr served as principal of Scotch Oakburn College for 10 years before joining The Geelong College in 2013.
He also chaired the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia.
Mr Barr has been contacted for comment.
