PUBLIC housing tenants can now be evicted for antisocial behaviour under the state government's tough "three strikes and you're out" policy. Hoarding, harassment and noise are just some of the offences listed as resulting in a strike. Tenants who commit serious offences such as assault or criminal damage could be immediately evicted with an automatic "third strike". Human Services Minister Jacquie Petrusma said the approach was not about punishment. "It is about protecting residents' rights to the private enjoyment of their homes, whether they are public housing tenants or those who live near public housing properties," Mrs Petrusma said. "Under the new approach, Housing Tasmania will continue to provide tenants with opportunities to improve their behaviour and avoid eviction, as the aim is to have no evictions." Mrs Petrusma said a new rewards system would also be introduced to acknowledge tenants who were good neighbours. "The government makes no apology for acting to protect the majority of Tasmanians who have the right to enjoy their lives without the antisocial intrusions of others," she said. Mrs Petrusma told State Parliament no evictions had occurred this financial year as tenants believed that the policy was already in place.
