Seven boys and seven girls make up the Tassie team which will take on the best in the country for the most prestigious School Sport Australia 12-and-under tennis event on the calendar.
Seven Northern players in William Bennett, Thomas Hans, William Gibson, Jacob Jamieson, Lucy Jones, Chelsea Leggett and Samuel Whitehead will be part of the Tasmanian team.
‘‘They start playing on Sunday and it will go through until the following Saturday,’’ Tennis Tasmania’s tournament and competitions co-ordinator, Trent Constance said.
‘‘We rank our players from one to seven and from there six people play each time in six singles matches, three mixed doubles and three doubles.
‘‘Each team member is guaranteed to play a minimum of two out of three matches in each tie.
‘‘All the best kids in the country will be taking part and running alongside it there is a platinum-level junior tournament which is like a state championship.’’
Constance said the competition would be tough for the Tassie players as would the change in climate.
‘‘The thing I’m most interested in is to see how they go in the heat,’’ he said.
‘‘We’re heading up there a couple of days early to try to acclimatise.
‘‘We will be up against the very best in Australia but we have our very best team going through so everyone is excited and can’t wait to get there.’’
Constance said they intended to rotate a boys’ and girls’ team captain each day of the tournament.
