Mr Cretan has previously sat on boards of the Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania and Tasmanian Skills Institute.
The appointment was signed off by Cabinet on Monday.
Premier Will Hodgman said Mr Cretan would work closely with the government to boost visitor numbers to the state.
The government has pledged to grow the number of visitors to Tasmania to 1.5 million people per year by 2020.
