The 30-year-old George Town man became agitated and took control of the vehicle while being transported to the Launceston General Hospital about 5am.
He then drove the ambulance, which was travelling from George Town, for about 500 metres before crashing into a railing, causing moderate damage.
The two ambulance officers that were on board were unable to restrain him, and had left the vehicle and called police.
Police are investigating the incident but not charges have been laid.
