Donald John Clarke, 40, died on July 24, 2011, 10 days after having spinal surgery at St Lukes Private hospital in Launceston.
Mr Clarke was taken to the LGH By ambulance on July 23 with breathing difficulties and hallucinations, the inquest heard.
However he was discharged that afternoon and died the following morning.
An autopsy revealed the cause of death as aspiration pneumonia.
The inquest is expected to last several days.
