They had just returned from a triumphant national eisteddfod, where the big band won a gold award and the concert band, gold and platinum.
Smiling students received a rousing ovation from waiting relatives and friends as they made their way into the airport lounge.
St Patrick's director of bands Fiona Mowat said that all the students who travelled were members of the concert band and 17 of them were also members of the big band.
``We were delighted when both bands won gold, the big band on Thursday and the concert band on Saturday, but the thing that really shocked us was that the judges said they were so impressed with the concert band, it won platinum too, which is unheard of,'' a proud Ms Mowat said.
The concert band played Child's Embrace and Out of the Shadows .
Ms Mowat said that the school's band program had been running for about 13 years and this was its best result.
The concert band had won gold before, but this was the first time the big band had won gold and this year was also the school's first platinum.
