Cameron James Brasher, 25, had previously pleaded not guilty to attempted murder following a dramatic police operation in the Central Highlands area.
However, an indictment filed in the Supreme Court charges Mr Brasher with two counts of aggravated assault.
The charges relate to Mr Brasher allegedly firing on Constable Adrian Eyers and Inspector Matt McCreadie with a sawn-off shotgun at separate times at Poatina.
Nobody was injured during the incident.
Police alleged the shootings occurred after a car chase in the region in February.
The accused has previously pleaded not guilty to the aggravated assault of Inspector McCreadie.
Mr Brasher appeared in the Supreme Court in Launceston yesterday via video link.
He is due to appear there again on June 10.
