The city's Wellington Street Coles was forced to evacuate after a fire broke out in its basement at about 3pm.
The fire started in an area belonging to Aurora Energy containing high voltage transformers and cabling.
The blaze knocked out traffic lights along Wellington Street.
The Tasmanian Fire Service attended and extinguished the blaze with ``extreme caution''.
Police and Aurora workers also attended.
``If the fire developed anymore the fire service was in a position to call on police and other emercency services to isolate a greater area,'' Launceston senior fire station officer Robert Featherstone said.
It's believed degraded equipment caused the fire.
