The Glebe Hill man, 34, was charged after an incident early this morning at Howrah.
Police will allege that the Southern district constable assaulted a taxi driver.
The taxi driver sustained facial abrasions.
The policeman was off-duty at the time.
He has been bailed to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court on May 12.
Professional Standards officers are investigating.
Deputy Commissioner Scott Tilyard said a decision on whether or not the officer would be stood down, would be made on Monday.
``It is not appropriate to comment further as this matter is before the court,'' he said.
