Launceston electrician Dale Quinn is leading the Bass Strait Jetski Challenge and posted the team's progress on Facebook.
``Got to Deal Island. Got smashed by huge swells and wind. It was forecast as smooth.
``Staying here the night because it's taken over 3 hrs to cover about 70km. We still have 100 to go.''
Two modified jetskis left Musselroe Bay, in the state's north-east, at dawn for the crossing.
The party was planning to island-hop across Bass Strait past Cape Barren Island, Flinders Island and Deal Island before landing at Port Albert in Victoria.
The jetskis are equipped with an extra fuel, food and camping equipment as well as GPS and radios.
The group said it had raised more than $5000 for the Kiss Goodbye to MS charity, a branch of MS Research Australia.
