The Allwinton Court unit was reported alight about 2am yesterday and was subject to ongoing forensic inspection by Tasmania Police yesterday.
The resident, a man who did not wish to be named, said he could have been killed if he was home _ instead he was playing computer games at a friend's nearby residence.
The man said he shifted his valuables to a mate's property after thieves twice succeeded, and failed a third time, to break into his unit.
``My friend banged on the door and said `your unit's on fire' _ I said `nah, f--- off it is', but then I could see the glow,'' the man said.
``I just ran straight past, I had two beautiful little kittens in there.''
He said he found the kittens safely outside the unit, which had ``fire rolling up over the guttering'', but about $400 or $500 worth of smartphone repair gear was destroyed.
``I felt sick and anxious, I just sat and watched it go up,'' he said.
Tasmania Police Senior Sergeant Craig Fox yesterday said findings from the forensic team would be assessed to determine damage and whether the fire was treated as suspicious.
