LABOR'S David O'Byrne has bowed out of the race for the fifth Franklin seat.
Mr O'Byrne last night conceded defeat to Liberal candidate Paul Harriss.
Mr Harriss looked certain to beat the former Labor minister going into today's Hare- Clark scrutiny, leading Mr O'Byrne by about 800 votes.
Final surplus distributions and early candidate exclusions cemented the outcome.
Mr O'Byrne congratulated Mr Harriss on his victory in an interview aired on Southern Cross news last night.
More than 50 candidates were knocked out of contention during yesterday's Hare- Clark scrutiny.
At least 10 candidates guaranteed their spot in the new-look House of Assembly.
Veteran Labor MP Julian Amos maintained an overnight lead of about 200 votes over lawyer Madeleine Ogilvie in a contest for Labor's second Denison seat.
But Dr Amos said without knowing where preferences would flow from minor party and independent candidates, the result was still too close to call.
"It's all very much up in the air at this stage and it would be presumptuous in the extreme to try and determine the outcome," he said.
"You don't know whether you're going to be the cock of the roost or the feather duster."
Liberal candidate Sarah Courtney has maintained a comfortable lead over Dorset Mayor Barry Jarvis in an intra-party tussle for the third seat in Bass.
At the end of yesterday's Hare-Clark carve-up, the Greens' Kim Booth appeared increasingly likely to knock Labor's Brian Wightman out of contention for re-election in the Northern electorate.
Competition for the fifth Lyons seat is alive and well, with Labor's David Llewellyn and the Greens' Tim Morris battling it out for the final spot.
Braddon Liberal candidates Roger Jaensch and Joan Rylah both have a comfortable lead over rogue Labor MP Brenton Best in the North- West electorate.
However, it is still possible Mr Best could be returned to Parliament.
The Hare-Clark carve-up continues today.
