Mr Smart, 28, of Launceston, died in the Launceston General Hospital's Intensive Care Unit on Friday night, after a freak accident with glass the previous morning.

Tributes for the keen fisherman, father and scaffolder have flowed on social media, and Fingal Football Club's senior coach, Matt Lowe, told The Examiner yesterday that the club's number 8 player and his cheeky smile would always be remembered.

"His number 8 guernsey will retire from the football club," Lowe said.

"The guernsey will come with us to every game and we'll hang it up before we run out."

Lowe said yesterday's game, which was the first this season for the club, was all for Mr Smart.

"It was a big emotional day and everything went out the window - all we wanted to do was win for him," Lowe said.

Friends and family have described Mr Smart as loyal, passionate, talented and dedicated, and someone with a love for fishing and his family.

He has left behind a six-year-old son, Zaide, who lives on the mainland, a brother and two sisters.

Brother Rowan still plays for Fingal, his uncle Stephen is the president, and his late father, David, also played.

Mr Smart lost his parents, David and Sharon, on July 10, 2009 - the state's blackest day on the roads - where nine people were killed in three separate crashes.

Mr and Mrs Smart had been travelling to a family funeral in Hobart with Mrs Smart's brother when they were killed near Conara on the Midland Highway.

Stephen Smart said Josh's brother and sisters decided yesterday to register as organ donors.

"I'm so proud of them," their uncle said.

"And I can't express enough how great the ICU looked after Josh."

Rocherlea Football Club, where Josh formerly played, has also expressed its condolences.

"He was highly regarded as a player and a person," the club's chairman, Graeme Gardner, said.

"He took pride in what he wanted to achieve, and he made sure he completed it."

The Fingal Football Club will hold a fund-raiser for Zaide at its next home game.
