Mr Smith will go to the Napa Valley for four weeks with all expenses paid in an attempt to learn more about the premier wine region and apply that knowledge when he returns home.
Dean Cocker, of Josef Chromy Wines, said the selection panel was impressed with Mr Smith's industry experience.
Mr Smith, 30, grew up in South Australia's Clare Valley wine region before his father Chris Smith purchased Clover Hill Wines at Pipers River.
He now runs viticulture consultancy Absolute Wines.
