The Launceston-born racer qualified in fifth place for the fourth race of the Sprint Cup series in his No. 9 Stanley Ford Fusion.
In a rain delayed and interrupted race Ambrose battled some early handling problems to work his way back into the leading pack over the final 30 laps.
In the best result for Richard Petty Motorsports in more than a decade, Ambrose's teammate Aric Almirola finished third in the team's No. 43 Ford Fusion.
Carl Edwards, also in a Ford, won his 22nd Sprint Cup race and third at the Bristol track. His teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was second and Tony Stewart was fourth.
It was Ambrose's first top 5 finished since 2012 and lifts him up to 15th place in the Sprint Cup standings after disappointing results in the first three races of the NASCAR season.
