The crash occurred about 11.30am today at the intersection of Riseley and Jillian streets at Kings Meadows.
Police say a marked police car was on mobile patrol when a bronze Holden Commodore failed to give way at the intersection and crashed into the police car.
The driver of the Holden immediately ran from the scene. Police searched the area but did not immediately find him.
About 2.25pm, he was sighted around Bond and Guy streets at Kings Meadows.
The area was contained and the man was taken into custody.
While police said the crash appeared to be unintentional, the car did appear to be travelling at high speed.
The two Tasmania Police constables travelling in the car were treated at the Launceston General Hospital for minor cars and bruises.
Their vehicle was extensively damaged.
Police have requested that anyone who saw a bronze 1999 Commodore sedan being driven erratically in the Kings Meadows area this morning call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
