THE Liberal Party has unveiled plans to boost the profile of Tasmania's beer industry. Liberal Leader Will Hodgman yesterday said the Liberals would invest $250,000 towards beer tourism if it won the state election. Mr Hodgman said the beer industry's tourism potential had until now been overlooked in favour of whisky, cider and wine. The cash injection would be used to promote beer festivals, develop a guide to local breweries and establish a website promoting the industry, Mr Hodgman said. The Brewing Association would contribute an additional $100,000 to the beer tourism plan. The initiative is part of $16 million in tourism funding the Liberal Party has already committed. Tourism was also the Greens' focus yesterday, with the party announcing a $12 million policy boost for tourism in the state's North-West. The Greens want to promote the Tarkine as the "Kakadu of the North-West" by introducing legislation establishing the region as a national park. Included in the party's commitment was $2 million for marketing and $5 million to establish a Tarkine Sustainable Development Authority, which would be based on the Port Arthur Management Authority. Also outlined was $1million to open a tourism management and hospitality training hub in Burnie and $500,000 to improve bushwalking tracks in the North-West.
