The nine-hectare fire in the White Beach area has been given a 'watch and act' alert level.
The town's caravan park and some houses have been evacuated.
There have so far been no reports of property being destroyed or damaged.
The road into White Beach is open only to residents.
Police have advised those residents wishing to evacuate to gather at Tasman District School at Nubeena.
They advise that the beach is also a safer evacuation site.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area unless returning to defend property.
