CARPENTER Luke Young will represent Tasmania in the joinery division of the national WorldSkills Australia competition after yesterday accepting a gold medal for his efforts in the regional competition. The 21-year-old Launceston resident went up against six competitors in the Tasmanian section late last year. It was his second tilt at the title, after first competing as a second-year apprentice. After competing last year as a fourth-year apprentice, Mr Young said he had learnt a huge amount between his attempts. "The difference between what a second and fourth- year apprentice does on- site is huge," he said. "You're doing a lot more hands-on stuff and have a lot more responsibility." Competitors in the joinery section were given a full day to assemble a four- pane window frame. Each join was completely different. Mr Young said the task required every second of allocated time. "I only just finished it in time," he said. "It was absolutely flat out, non-stop the whole time." Mr Young will fly to Perth in October for the national competition. Carson Denouden will represent Tasmania in the fitting division and Joshua Webb in butchery.
